General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Are you ready? - 26th March 2018

It’s not long now until the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. So, the big question is: Are you ready for GDPR? Have you even heard of it?

What is GDPR

In a nutshell it is a replacement for the outdated Data Protection Act (DPA). A lot has changed since the DPA was first introduced in 1988 and it’s update in 2003. More information is stored digitally than ever before, and the current data protection laws are no longer fit for purpose. According to EUGDPR.org “The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy."

How to prepare for it

If you already comply to the existing Data Protection Act (DPA) then you are well on the way to complying. If not, then you have some work to do and time is running out, so act sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, there is a lot of information and help out there. As a starting point I would check out this guide on the ICO website: Preparing for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 12 steps to take now. Also, on the ICO website, take a look at: Getting ready for the GDPR checklist. The GDPR comes into force on 25th May 2018, so you have no time to lose.
